Hello all!

Peace Club did some work in the Garden on Oct. 20th

*We labeled the boxes with ceramic signs -- which aren't very sturdy and some need to be redone. They are sweet pea, poppy, orange blossom and tulip.

*We planted 4 fall veggies: carrots, chard, arugula and radishes.

*We also trimmed and weeded and thinned the tomatoes.

*Jaca and a couple girls got the greenhouse sorted and packed up for the night.

Now we wait 10-20 days and see if any seeds sprout!!!

Happenings in the garden

1. Ms Krummel and Ms Devine will meet 5th on Monday, Oct. 12 to talk about progress.

2. Ms Truman has a garden party scheduled for after school Tuesday.

3. FEAST has been filling and turning the compost every week.

4. There is one bed ready for re-planting. FEAST will make fried green tomatoes for lunch next week, then we can make available the rest of the beds.

5. Ms Degregorio's class is planning to plant potatoes

6. Two students from FEAST are going to erect the green house up by the road because it is flat.

7. I bought some organic dirt last year that needs to be delivered?

Planting etc.

The garden is really starting to take shape. In the last week we have planted beds 2 and 4, dug around the lemon trees and pulled up weeds, watered (today, Wed 4/1)and started to dig around some of the other trees so that they are not deprived of water from all the weeds.

Next steps could include building a boarder around the trees so it is clear where we need to weed, plant flowers along the fence, and clean up the area close to the recycling as well as the plants near the art building.

Spring is so fun!

Ms Devine's 7th period class worked in the garden on 3/31. We turned the old compost, it looked OK, it was wetter at the bottom and I think if keep turning it every week it will be fine. We also started to dig around some of the rose bushes to get the weeds out, it was hard going now that the earth is dryer. We added our ready compost to the two citrus tree and one other plant out there. I think those that have compost will be obvious. Ms Devine brought some citrus food today to feed the citrus trees as well. I'll give it to Ms Shrigley.

a few things

It feels like the garden is really taking off! It is all very exciting and making me love Spring time even more this year. A few things:
1. My group is turning over the beds- but I am not sure if the compost soil has been added. Also, we are planning to water (see number 4 below).
2. It looks like some new things have been planted... so we will not turn that bed over.
3. Ms. Devine had the brilliant idea of numbering the beds so we know what is planted where and which bed we are taking about.
4. Do we have any kind of watering can vessel that we can use because the garden hose that is out there does not appear functional. Any other watering ideas?
5. Finally, and most importantly, the garden website that Ms. Krummel constructed is fantastic! The calender is very useful as is the countdown to harvest. Lovely!

Bee Scientific Study

Many of us have already heard that our regional honeybees are in decline. We have the opportunity to help study the local bee population and add our data to a national database. Our sunflowers and instructions are on their way. Learn more at: http://www.greatsunflower.org/en

Website

We have a website! I'm in the final stages of putting together a website for our garden. The website links back to this blog but allows us to organize our other information in one place (group calendar, wish list, compost presentation, garden map) as well as a "Days 'till Harvest" countdown tool.

yesterday, Tuesday, March 10

Yesterday my group turned the soil. It was a perfect day to be outside in the garden! I think we are ready to plant more seeds. Let me know when you want to do a garden map so we know what is planted where.

Chefs in the garden

Here are a few pictures of the FEAST class in the garden. Also a picture of the new cilantro plant. I also planted parsley, oregano,  and mint.

Today, Muli and Martha were planting chard, collard greens and we added soil amandment to the dirt and also to our garden. Then we water the new planted with water in pitures from our kitchen, because the water in the garden doesn't work. Pictures to come.

Compost

Zynal and Michele turned the compost. We had lots of FUN!!!!!!!!!!
There was lots of worms and ants!!!!!!! Gross!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Zynal did
a lot of the work. It was really hard!!!!!

New plants

I finally got to the nursery this weekend and bought some herbs and some organic soil amendment to use while we are waiting for our compost to be usable. I'll do some planting as soon as the weather is better.

This is our Cap Garden blog so that we can keep each other in the know about what we are doing in the garden.

Thanks all of you for being involved in the garden! Especially thanks to Ms. Krummel for sharing her knowledge with us this last semester.

Probably the best way for us to use this blog will be to have a student update it whenever they do anything in the garden.

Ms Krummel worked with several of my students last week and turned the compost. She told me it was a little too wet, so on Friday 2/27 my students and I turned both piles again.
